Trading hours are the time during which a financial market is open for business. The opening and closing times of these markets can vary, depending on the exchange or country in question. The stock market in the United States is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time (GMT -5). Exceptions apply during major holidays.

• Pre-market: Trading that takes place before the market opens is known as pre-market trading. It generally begins at 8 a.m. Eastern time.
• After-hours: The after-hours market is the time period following the stock market's closing bell. This is when traders can continue to trade until 8 pm EST.
